Pre-Merdeka

Malaysia will be celebrating its 50th anniversary soon. It has come a long way since Independence Day. Malaysia is a country of myriad colours of people, culture and heritage. Malays, Chinese, Indians all living in the same country, cooperating with each other. Beautiful with its green and lush sceneries, beautiful mountains, hills and beaches, it definitely boasts as the ideal tourist attraction.
I love the food in Malaysia, I can never get it anywhere else in the world. The mamak stalls – I love chapati and teh tarik! Not forgetting hawker stalls that sell my favourite fried koay teow. The government strives hard in maintaining order for the people like beautifying the city, the roads and even schools. At the moment, our roads are still congested but traffic jams make KL city truly Malaysia! As for other states, maybe less congestion although we see a possibility of that in growing cities like Penang and Ipoh. Buildings and technology infrastructure are being developed rapidly. We are on par with most other developing countries. Economically, we are sustaining well although cars and houses could be cheaper and employees’ wages could be increased.
Malaysia has its little idiosyncrasies that set us apart from other countries. It makes Malaysia uniquely Malaysia. For example the Mat Rempits on the roads or the chatty taxi men who seem to know a lot about current affairs.
Although I stay in Malaysia for only a maximum of possibly two to three weeks per year as I am not based locally, I still take an interest on what is happening and make sure I learn something new about Malaysia each time. I am afterall a Malaysian although I was born in the Philippines and grew up in the U.S.
Well, after 50 years of independence; Malaysia has what it takes to be ultimate destination in Asia.
My hope for the future? Smoking to be curbed in Malaysia. Improved living standards. Better broadband services. Greater technology. No discrimination among levels of society, races and gender. No more social illnesses. A healthier Malaysia. Less pollution. Less congestion. Better environment. More order. More talents churned out in all areas. Nicer buildings. Everything should look as new (well-maintained), something Malaysians should improve on. Stop the litterbugs. Strictly enforce law and order.
