Josiah Ng – Malaysia’s Track Cyclist

This morning I had a cup of coffee to get me going on my road ride. Thing is I don’t usually drink coffee. I was brought up in a very health conscious background. My father is a health doctor and my mother is a registered dietitian. In fact, I was raised as a vegetarian and only started eating meat in 2006. I decided to go carnivore because I was prone to getting sick during my tough training cycles. As a result, I got a blood test and it revealed that I was low in Iron, creatine, and a few other things that are found in meat so I decided to give it a go. I do love the vegetarian diet though but I think that it’s pretty tough to be a sprinter type athlete fueled by tofu. My mom of course begs to differ.

Anyway, back to the coffee. I drank it because someone bought it for me and I thought eh what the heck I’ll give it a go to see what all the buzz is all about. And buzz I did….all day! I felt like I wasn’t even in my own body as I was shaking. It didn’t feel right even though I had a decent track session in the afternoon. I’ve finally come off my caffeine buzz 8 hours later and I’m relieved to be back to normal again. I think its because my body is just not used to the caffeine or that was one strong cup of coffee. Regardless, I think I’ll just stick to my regular hot chocolate or orange juice at the cafe from now on thankuverymuch!

Sarah and Andy were coming over to the house last night for a workout. Sarah called and asked if I wanted them to pick up a Starbucks for me? Naturally I said “You Bet”, and asked for a brewed coffee with room for cream. Push forward one hour later…I was literally bouncing off the walls!!! Sarah was almost beside herself laughing. She said that she and Andy figured they could go to the theatre that evening or they could get me a double shot of espresso and watch me bounce off the walls all night (kinda like a wind up toy). They obviously chose the later…I was running on Jet Fuel all night…As you are fully aware, she is not to be trusted!!!

    All the Best

Ahlost: I also enjoy hot chocolate more. Either that or a chai latte.

Cliff: I enjoyed that story. Boy I sure do miss hanging out with you guys like in the old days. Sarah is still up to her mischiefs eh! haha. Look forward to seeing all of you in Beijing. Love you guys.

Don’t give up on a plant based diet. You just have to eat the right stuff. Come join us at OrganicAthlete. We have an elite cycling team that is all vegan and can help you get your diet figured out! And tofu isn’t the right stuff, it is okay once in awhile, but it is a highly processed food and very hard for the body to digest.

Email me if you want any details, I am the leader of the Portland chapter of OrganicAthlete.

Yeah, you’re better off with the orange juice.

You’re probably better off without the meat too. I don’t think its the vegetables that are making you sick. If you need support in sticking with a plant-based diet, OrganicAthlete is here to help.

Just so you know, perhaps the greatest track and field sprinter/ long jumper of all time, Carl Lewis was not only vegetarian but vegan during his best years as an Olympic star. 10 medals, 9 gold over the span of 4 Olympics (five if you count the 1980 boycott) is a pretty good testimony. I think it could be a huge advantage, especially if you consider the longevity of his, and potentially your career. Check out this video of him here:

Here is his wiki page with more information on him: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Lewis

    Best of Luck.
