Surgery Today!

Posted by josiahng on September 2, 2008

I woke up bright and early this morning at 6am and caught a taxi to the Kuala Lumpur Sports Medicine centre where I will have my plate from my collarbone taken out. About a year and a half ago, I had a bad crash at the World Championships in Mallorca, Spain. It resulted in me breaking my collarbone in several places. I chose to have it operated on right then and there which was a mistake because they did not do a proper job. The plate started to fail so nine days later, I had it done properly in California by my friend and Orthapedic surgeon, Dr. Marans.

In the last year, I’ve never gotten used to all that hardware inside of me. Everytime I’m in the gym, it gets in the way. I can’t do cleans properly because when the bar lands on my shoulders, it hits the plate and hardware causing much pain. A long and unsightly keloid scar has also formed as a result of two back to back operations which didn’t allow the wound to heal very well the second time.

This time around, Dr. Tay will remove the plate, and fix the scar. I’m scheduled for a 10am surgery and he said it will take approximately ninety minutes. I’ll also spend the night here for precautionary measures before being discharged tomorrow morning. I hope everything goes well because I have some packages to “deliver” tomorrow morning for my sponsor, Fedex. That and I have some kids to visit at a children’s shelter. I don’t want to disappoint those kids.

Well I’m off to sleep now.  The anesthesiologist is coming to put give me a trip to la la land. Good night!

Can’t you sue the guy who did this to you? This injury is going to affect how you’re going to train for the rest of your career. I mean how are you going to do squats and shoulder exercises with the plates? He should be barred or at least suspended for a long time for this.

I guess you’d just have to find other creative ways to work out those areas. Perhaps you can try incorporating working out with resistance bands? Found these on the web – http://www.bodylastics.com/

Anyway recover well and don’t go training sooner than you should. Say hi to Kim for me. Thanks for taking a pic with me at Zouk the other day by the way!

    See you guys around,

    Ams
